What does a new year look like? For many people a new year means resolutions, dreams, and hope for the future. For some it can look like uncertainty, fear, or the resignation that nothing ever changes. Some people commit to reading the Bible through in a year. Some purchase a gym membership and decide to workout at least five days a week. Some will say this is the year I go back to school, start saving for retirement or lose fifty pounds. Maybe you’re ready to confront compulsive or addictive behavior. Some have made these commitments in years past and have failed so often their only commitment is to not make commitments. Some of us though, know someone that made a commitment and changed the trajectory of their lives. What’s the difference between those who experience amazing change and those give up by the end of January?
There’s no single reason why some of us don’t accomplish what we commit to but, I would suggest, one common reason is because we make a commitment but fail to make a plan. Or we make an unrealistic plan that sets us up for failure, like the guy that spent the past year on the couch but decides that starting January 1 he will be in the gym seven days a week. That’s probably not going to happen. What we need is a plan that takes into consideration where we are at and where we want to go. We need a plan that sets reasonable goals. Goals that be measured and celebrated. We are probably going to need encouragement and support as we work to meet those goals. We may need to adjust our plan along the way. I have personally found that if I am working with someone, I accomplish much more than if I am working by myself. I have learned that change takes time and effort. I have also learned that if I can talk to someone that has experienced some success in what I am attempting to achieve I can learn from their experience and avoid some of their mistakes.
Here, at RW Coaching, we can help you build the bridge from where you are to where you want to be. We can help you establish a plan that will get things started. As you pursue recovery, we can help you discover healthy tools and coping abilities. We help you learn to respond instead of reacting. This gives you space to process your feelings instead of attempting to hide from them.
